Mathieu Zurstrassen

Mathieu Zurstrassen (b.1979 in Brussels, BE) is a trained architect who transitioned to the field of visual arts in 2013.
Channeling his understanding of structure and design into an experimental practice, his work emphasizes the process of construction as a form of exploration, where materiality and technique become tools for storytelling and critical reflection.
Zurstrassen’s creations extend beyond the tangible, engaging with the symbolic and philosophical dimensions of the invisible; what exists beyond the surface and how it resonates between its creator and the audience. Playing with the meticulous codes of craftsmanship, he addresses aesthetic and conceptual challenges that often border on the ineffable.
His works draw upon the ambiguity of materials, juxtaposing their rawness with poetic delicacy to provoke thought, humor, and introspection.
Deeply rooted in today’s societal habits, Zurstrassen's work serves as a mirror to contemporary life, questioning our relationship with technology, consumption, and the invisible systems that underpin our daily routines.
Highly technical yet profoundly human, Mathieu Zurstrassen creates pieces that are as much about engineering as they are about emotion, using humor and subtle irony to challenge and engage the viewer.
Since 2013 the artist has been exhibited in various events, galleries and festivals such as Ars Electronica, KIKK Festival or Venice Biennale (OFF).
