Vladimir Logutov (b. 1980, Samara, Russia) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses painting, sculpture, video and installation. His work investigates the relationship between the artwork, exhibition space and viewer, often questioning the conventions through which art is produced, displayed and perceived.
Initially working predominantly with video, Logutov developed an interest in human attention, perception and the mechanisms of the image. From the late 2000s, he increasingly incorporated painting and sculpture into his practice, exploring the possibilities of traditional media through a conceptual approach. His works frequently create a dialogue between abstraction and representation, material and image, as well as between the artwork and the architectural context in which it is encountered.
A recurring concept in his practice is the “exhibition within a painting”, particularly developed through his "Meetings"and "Next Level" projects, in which the painting becomes both an autonomous image and a space for exhibiting, framing and reinterpreting other works. His sculptural practice similarly engages with industrial materials and the history of modernity, while his monochrome paintings explore perception, association and the limits of representation.
Logutov has participated in major international exhibitions including the Guangzhou Triennial, Venice Biennale, Moscow Biennale, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin. His work is held in public collections including the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow Museum of Modern Art and FRAC Bretagne. He received the Innovation Prize – Artist of the Year in 2018 and the Joseph Brodsky Prize for Visual Arts the same year.
