Dasha Rybina: Reverse Side

8 December 2022 - 4 February 2023
In-Gate Gallery is pleased to present the solo show by Dasha Rybina “Reversed Side”, on view from  8 December, 2022, until  4 February, 2023.

For her first show with the gallery the artist selected paintings from “Reverse Side” series (2016 - 2018)  and graphic works created with ink on paper (2014 - 2019).

Dasha Rybina (b. 1983 in Donetsk, Ukraine) develops her art practice in both drawing and painting, focusing on the representation of nature and urban landscapes.
Graphic works are made with ink on paper using the author's technique based on “washing out” the image. An image filled with light is born from the synthesis of a drawing, created according to the artist's intention, its careful elaboration, and the use of the directed "destructive" force of the water flow.
The “black squares” hiding the structure and image of the future work are washed off by pressurized water, “liberating” the image, and it takes the form of a trace, an imprint, and evokes an association with an old photo, with something one has already experienced, with a memory.
The creative process is at the same time work over the image and the art performance. The image that appears as the result embodies the author's intention and influence of the movement of water.
Industrial aesthetics, images of mechanisms and architectural structures in the works of Dasha Rybina continue the theme of natural structures and systems, forming two poles of one whole and balance the interaction of these poles. This unity is one of the main themes of the artist's reflections.

Paintings by Dasha Rybina included in the “Reverse Side” series, convey a sensation of elusiveness, with their recognizable yet evanescent imagery. Peering into the paintings, we are involuntarily entering into the artist’s fragile space and find ourselves in a reality that is assembled from hundreds of brush strokes, making it possible for us to penetrate through the vibrant pictorial layer. Each composition is symbolic. The artist interprets familiar images, translating their portrayal into the language of subconscious and intuitive perception.
