Alexandra Dementieva (b.1960 in Moscow, RU) is a Russian artist living and working in Belgium. She primarily specializes in interactive installation and video art.
As a rule, at the core of Dementieva’s video and interactive installations lies the artist’s cultural experience — not in terms of pure emotion but rather in a way that is connected with a certain cultural phenomenon, be it a book, a film or a philosophical concept — usually of an iconic author. Dementieva is both a cinephile and a voracious reader, with her interests ranging from classical prose to philosophical literature, from films by Alfred Hitchock, David Lynch, Roman Polansky, Andrei Tarkovsky to audacious psychological thrillers and unabashed horror films.
After having extracted the visual experience of her interest from a particular author or work, Alexandra Dementieva presents it, as mentioned above, recast in purely western humanistic terms.
The idea of interaction between the viewer and an artwork, mediated by technologically progressive visualization methods, lies at the core of Alexandra Dementieva’s work. In her installations the artist uses various art forms on an equal basis: dance, music, cinema and performance. Akin to an explorer she raises questions related to social psychology and theories of perception suggesting solutions to them by contemporary artistic means, that is by taking a subjective stance behind a camera. Her technically-complicated installations focus on the role of the viewer and his or her interaction with an artwork and bring forth ways of provoking the viewer’s involvement thus allowing hidden mechanisms of human behaviour to be revealed. By changing the viewer’s perception, provoking a willingness to enter into communication, ingraining information into his or her both explicit and sensuous memory, the artist exposes viewers to certain elements of an “exercise machine” by means of which she offers them the opportunity to upgrade their reality.
